It felt like there were tons and tons of ways to fight through every encounter whether it was a respectable course of action or not. But it was one of many things that made the gameplay so incredibly fun. In the original it looked so goofy, it was almost like an unintended yet lucky accident. I have this theory that RE4 was in a unique position where games from that era, no matter how polished, still gave the player plenty of leeway to use any technical shortcomings to their advantage in a fun way.
